SUNNY WEEKEND coming!

Postby jonnyNITRO » Tue Jan 26, 2010 2:08 pm

Well, with sunny skies coming this weekend and a more manageable soil, we should have a large group of riders out for Sat. Or at least several small groups.

Hi John - I'm up for a ride on Saturday, snow may keep us out at the higher elevations but I'm sure we can find something in the lowlands. :ride:

Any ideas? Maybe H.V., Antelope (again), Rowher or even Ballinger-Quatal? I'm up for most anywhere.

Looking forward to a ride!

What's Ballinger-Quatal? I've never heard of that one.
Is it a fun ride? What's the terrain like?

Hey John - Ballinger is a USFS off-road area near the intersection of Hwy 166 & Hwy 33 - out near the town(s) of Cuyama and New Cuyama. Here is a link with some video that Terry (Fubar) shot during a ride we did a while back:

...and another:

http://www.vholdr.com/node/18563

I'd say the terrain is a lot like your socal off-road areas - some whopped out sections on the main trail in but lots of nice single track through chapparal and pinyon pines. It's a pretty nice area w/great views.

Quatal is the canyon just south - its a fun spot to do just before or after a visit to Ballinger. Lots of fast sandy riverbed! There's also a great single track at the back end of the canyon that's a bit rocky but a fun challenge. :ride:

C'mon everybody - let's ride (somewhere...anywhere?), it's gonna be a nice (mostly dust-free) weekend!

YEAH ! That looks like a blast.
Where do we stage? And how far (miles) is the ride?

Just follow Ballinger Canyon Road all the way to the end (3-4 miles from Hwy 33) and the staging area. There is a campground and pit toilets there too. I don't think there are more than 50-60 miles of trail in the whole canyon. Add about 25 more miles for the Quatal side trip.

Also, you might want to check - if you truck the bike up I think you'll need a USFS Adventure Pass for the parked vehicle. I think it's $5.00/day whether you buy it in advance or get a "Notice of Non-Compliance" and buy it after the fact.

Whatcha say meeting at the staging area around 9:30 or so on Saturday? :ride:

Come on! What else are you going to do on a beautiful Saturday afternoon?
I'm going to truck my bike up there and unload. That way I've got extra fuel and tools and I don't ride my bike on the highway that far.

OK Nitro and John E. - we're on for Ballinger Canyon tomorrow morning. I'll be leaving a little later so it'll be more like 9:45am when I finally make to the stage area. If you got one, please bring along your two-way radio. It promises to be a great day for ridin' :ride:

GREAT ride today Nitro and John E., as usual great riding buds made for an awesome day - you guys dragged me through some awesome trails. The wx perfect, and the trails - dust free! :)

Even though the staging area/campground was the fullest I've ever seen it - we saw only a couple folks on the trails the whole day. And the best part... exploring a bunch I've trails I've never been on before. Oh Yeah!

Here are a few pics (click on them to make 'em bigger). I saw John snappin' away, post a couple if you get a chance.

Shahin (Falcon) came up on his road machine and paid a visit after our ride. Nice way to end the ride, it was good to see you!

Wow! What an awesome day of riding. So much variety in the terrain. Everything form sandy wash to mud/snow at the peaks. That's the first time I've been to Ballinger. I bet it's not the last. Beautiful country too. It's always great to ride with friends. Thanks Eric and John E.
It was good to meet Falcon too. (Cool bike)

Hey John - Thanks for the pics & the great ride! Guess it might be a little wet this coming weekend but maybe we can set something up for H.V. or Frazier in the next few weeks. Talk to you soon.

Sounds good :) I love riding up there.
There are still a bunch of trails I've never been on along the top of the mountain.
