Ride In S.B. This Friday, January 8th

Postby ericbee » Tue Jan 05, 2010 1:16 pm

Hi All - We're planning on going up to Santa Barbara this Friday the 8th to try out some USFS trails. We're looking at Buckhorn, Camuesa and Divide Peak OHV Trails - try and ride all three if we can. Talked w/the Paradise Ranger Station and confirmed all trails are open. Hope you can ride up w/us or meet us there, let's ride! :ride:

Where do you stage and what is the approximate mileage for the day's ride?

Hi jonnyNITRO- We'll ride our bikes up from Ventura and try Divide Peak first. The trailhead is at the east end of East Camino Cielo (ECC), right below the ridgeline. Last gas (Montecito) to this point is about 20 miles. If you're trailering, there's lots of parking for staging at the top. The Divide Peak Trail is about 20 miles R/T - with an MX track of sorts right near the beginning of the trail.

Next (and time permitting), we'll drive west on pavement across ECC to Hwy 154 head north to Paradise Road then back to Upper Oso Campground - that's the trailhead for Buckhorn Rd. and Camuesa. I'd say the mileage on this pavement leg is about 35-45 miles.

Buckhorn and Camuesa trails together are about 30-40 miles R/T.

Just before you turn on Paradise Road you can stay on 154 for 8 more miles and there's GAS at the Lake Cachuma Store. And, we'll probably plan for a lunch break at the Paradise Grill - just before Upper Oso.

Total mileage is at about 105 miles, 125 w/trip up from Montecito gas and 141 w/the side trip for gas.

The last time I did these trails was on an MTB about 12 years ago - so I've pulled the approximate mileages off of the CTUC OHV map and Google Earth. They should be pretty close - but I always over estimate on the side of caution.

We'll leave around 0730 from Ventura w/stop in Montecito for gas, I guess will be up to the trailhead about 0900.

If you decide to join us, lemme know if you'll be meeting us at the trailhead or riding up. Hope to see you on Friday! :ride:

Great ride! Thanks Eric for putting it together. A scare at the end, but it turned out OK.

Daniel had an off on the way down to SB in the twisties. Looks like he power slided out of a turn and it got away from him.

Thank god this bank was there to stop him and the bike.

Aside from the sore hip and bent bars, (scratches were already there) he's OK.

That was a great ride. Thanks guys for the tour and all the helpful tips about dualsport riding. Give a shout out to "supermoto guy", Jeremy. Amazing ride on street tires.
Looking forward to the next ride.

Yeah, that was a great ride. The weather was absolutely phenomenal and it was cool to have a few new faces along. New guys included Daniel on the KTM950 who weighed only 115 lbs and was able to make that bike fly, Jeremy on a DRZ400SM w/Avon street tires (wha?!?!?) and John on a wr250 who trailered all the way up from Saugus. Then of course was Roger also on a KTM950 and Terry and I on our DR650's. It was fortunate for us that Jeremy and Daniel had been up to Divide Peak before and knew the route well - in addition they showed us some great technical single track at the west end of the trail that really made the ride. We also played around at the "MX Track" too. We weren't able to make it to Buckhorn or Camuesa Trail due to time constraints, but that will give us something for next time. To cap off a stellar ride Daniel and Terry dragged us to a great BBQ at a friends' shop in Goleta - good food and thanks again (profusely) to John at Condor Machine Shop. :-o

Thank goodness that Daniel's mishap didn't leave him w/much more than torn pants and a sore bum.

Here are some pics...
