Kennedy & Troy Meadows October 8, 9 & 10

Postby ericbee » Sun Sep 05, 2010 9:41 am

Hey Guys -

OK - It's a ways off but we've decided to set up our next overnighter back to Kennedy & Troy Meadows :)

John, Terry and I didn't get a chance to explore all the single track up there so another 3-day trip is a must-do!

So, mark your calenders for October 8, 9 & 10... unless there's an earthquake or flood, this trip is gonna happen!

If you're interested in the trip - here's a link to our trip report the last time we were there...

Hope you can make it - with all that high-quality single track... you won't be sorry!

Eric- I can load your bike up in my truck and drive up with some supplies: wood for the fire, steaks, drinks, and chairs.

I should be in for this one also. I've got some firewood I want to get rid of before winter.

That would be great.
What kind of wood do you have? Pine, Oak?
I'll bring a can of Baked Beans too...? ... or, maybe not :P
I'll bring a camp lantern too.

I've got enough Oak and split up kindling for one night. Might be able to scrounge more lumber by then.

I've also got a steel fire pit made out of a washing machine drum. And a *clean* BBQ grill for the top. Much better for radiant heat than the pits/BBQ's they have up there.

We'll need that for sure. Good idea. I can bring some lumber as well.
Do you have a truck for your bike and supplies?

Wow what a weekend we just had (Labor Day). :) I need another weekend to recoup.

I will put this KM ride on my calendar but as of now that is not an off Friday for me. I did camp & ride up there in July the weather was perfect.

Yeah, but don't know if it'll make it up 9 Mile Road. Going *down* the road will be interesting as well. I'll be getting a Triple A membership soon.

BTW, can we find a campsite that isn't downwind of the pit toilet this time?

I don't know Terry... that pit toilet added just the ambiance I was looking for!!

Truckin' up firewood is a great idea, it'll be nice to burn something other than twigs and pine cones in the BBQ.

Really looking forward to exploring that massive chunk of single track we didn't get to at the south end of Kennedy!!

Dusty - Hope you can join us, you too Reg!

Just so everyone knows... we won't get up there until Friday evening after work. So you don't have to race up there in a panic. From Antelope Valley, it takes 2 hours to get to camp. From Santa Clarita or Castaic it should be around 3 hours.

Fubar - We'll find a spot further from the outhouse I agree. It's nice to have them close for that late night runs, though, especially since the nights will be colder.
And depending on who's coming with us, you might be able to hitch a ride instead of careening off the highway in your truck.

Eric - I can meet you at school and we'll load up there. 2 hours out, we'll get to the campground around 7 o'clock Friday night. Just enough light to find a good spot.

Another option is the overload parking area. Just no toilets on that side. (Remember the boys riding into camp early in the morning? )

You guys that live in the Valencia area have it made cause you are so close to riding areas. It takes me 5.5 hours to Troy as a minimum including a quick pit stop for chow & fuel. And thats petal to the metal. My truck is starting to overheat. I swapped the thermostat before that last trip to Mammoth & noticed in the radiator that there is a scale buildup inside around the tubes. That is the culprit. Any ideas if there is a product that will disolve that "plaque" ? :?: Its either that or a new radiator :banghead:

Even if you go up the 5 and cut across the 138 ? I guess that makes sense. Another hour from Venture to Santa Clarita (4 hours total on Google)

It's totally up to you. You still have a month to decide.

Okay guys, time to start talking about the trip again. Looks like the temps are about to drop down again. We should be in for a good weekend of the 9th & 10th.

Hey John - I think you're right, the NOAA extended forecast is listing great weather coming in up there, mid-40's at night and a comfy mid-70's during the day... can't be beat!! :)

Spoke w/Terry and it sounds like his foot is healin' up and he (and his firewood) should be in too - that's good news.

We'll have to get our supply lists dialed in, I can bring along the stove again...

C'mon guys... this may be the last chance before the snowy weather moves in!
