Miller Jeep Trail Ride (Lockwood)

Postby jonnyNITRO » Sun Jun 13, 2010 4:09 pm

Well, this ride was with the largest group that I've ever been with. We had 9 riders and a variety of experience levels. We left H.V. around 9:30am and headed for the hills.

Then we crossed over the first creek...

and got chased down by Law Enforcement. He made a mistake, thinking that we were motocross riders and let us go.
Once on top of the mountain, we took a break and prepared for the next stage.

Talking about the Miller Jeep Trail, everyone agreed that going down would be best, since some of the guys didn't want to go up it. Come to think of it, I don't remember if anyone in our group had every been on that trail before... oh well, here goes nothin'

To say that the trail was rocky is an understatement.

Then we had the 4x4 traffic to content with. But, all the drivers were totally cool.
After all it is their trail.

We finally made down to the bottom and met up with twenty or so Jeeps, Scouts, and Toyotas.

Lunch time under the trees.
After lunch we had to make a decision which way to go. We had to get out of the canyon and no one wanted to go back up the Miller trail, so we had to find a new trail. We kinda got stuck on this hill for awhile. It turned out to be a real test, this hill climb. Everybody was so busy working (pushing, pulling swapping rides, etc. ) I forgot to take a good pict. So, the best way I can describe it is like a rock garden on top of a rock garden on a uphill.

This hill tested the limits of our abilities, patience, and our physical endurance.
2 hours later we stopped to rest.

Finally, we met up with another huge, slippery and rocky downhill. This hill a few riders too, including myself (on the way back up). Thank God no one got hurt and none of the bikes were damaged beyond repair.

Rocky, Dusty, and Loose were the words of the day.
Almost at the end of the ride we saw Lockwood Valley.

8 hours later, we made to the road and it was time to eat dinner at Mike's Pizza. Great stuff!

A welcome sight to all of us.
Our trip was over and we ALL made it back home in one piece.
This was a memorable experience for all of us. But, that's what it's all about, isn't it. That's why we bought these bikes and do what we do... adventure. I had fun and look forward to doing that trail again. Thanks for all the help and moral support from everyone in the group. It's times like these that can drive tensions and frustrations high, but we all kept a pretty positive attitude throughout the whole day. Thanks for the ride: Eric, Terry, John, Tim, Scott, Dan, Richard, Shahin.
Jonny.

Surprisingly it wasn't that far. I think it was about 45 miles. But that's a rough estimate.

Very nice trip report and pictures Nitro - some of those shots *almost* convey the steepness of that Miller downhill.

Dusty - Distance from Lane Ranch C.G. in H.V. to Lockwood Valley Rd. - 32 miles (not including loops and shuttles). Total time: 8.5 hours.

Distance from top of Alamo Mtn. at Dutchman C.G. to Lockwood Valley Rd. - 13 miles. Total time: 7.5 hours...

Great report and pics Johnny, only thing I might add was the steep decent at both ends of the trail made this one a challenge from start to finish, one way in and one way out.

Eric - Thanks for the more accurate data on mileage.

Dan - You're right. Once you commit, there's no turning back.
