Another Kennedy Meadows ride

Postby jonnyNITRO » Mon Oct 11, 2010 10:14 am

Well, this weekend was awesome for riding in the hills of Sequoia.
Fubar and Eric arrived in camp Friday afternoon and get in some riding before we showed up. They'll have to talk about that part of the ride.
I happened to catch up with Falcon in Mojave getting gas and he followed my to the campgrounds. We got in just short of dark and the camp fire was already cooking. Set up the tents and ready for the cold night.
Fuber brought his custom grill (made from an old washer basin) and we cooked up some steaks and potatoes for dinner. Um, um, good.

The night chill caught up to us before we knew it and the fire was a welcome addition. By the time we got up in the morning it was in the low 30s ! Freezing. During the night we heard a big caliber gun shot. Never did find out what or where it was. hunters were all over the campgrounds. (Deer season).
So, once the sun came up, we began to thaw out and get ready for the day's ride.

We took of for Mahogany Creek Trail and found some of the ponds to be frozen. (No surprise). I took the lead and snapped a couple of shots along the trail.

Better than coffee in the morning.
We stopped just before the drop-in to Rattlesnake canyon entrance and planned our route for the day.

The water is low this time of year so the 4 or 5 creek crossing were very shallow. The riding was tedious with all the whoops down there. But other than that it's a fun ride along the creek. Took a left before entering Rattlesnake Trail and found some big rocky sections.

We hit another tricky section with large boulders just a few hundred yards up from there.

As it turns out, this trail was marked Most Difficult. (the map said intermediate) Oh well, we made it and no one got hurt. :)

Several sections had fallen trees that need to be passed with a go-around, but the go-arounds were not always much easier.

The guys decided it was time to take a break after that section and se we located a spot that seemed to be familiar to many previous riders because there was a nice wide flat area carved out. Everyone was happy to get a break.

Eventually we made it to Corral Meadow. Beautiful place.

As you can see, the elevation of Corral Meadows was over 8000 feet and what a beautiful day. We continued up to Stony Meadows and had lunch there.

Time for lunch...

Falcon wanted to put a bit more air in his front tire and while we waited a hunter came rolling up on an old Honda. He had his rifle strapped to his back and we talked a bit. Seems he was parking there and hiking the mounting behind us to hunt. He came all the way from Colorado to hunt for the weekend.
Nice guy.
:ride: Since Stony is a dead end, we headed back through familiar territory.
Here you can find Eric (very small) inbetween the trees ahead of me.

and some lattice block for the wetlands.

and the trail out was relaxing. I think it was in the upper 60s for the day and clear skies.

As we made it back, we dropped down Beach Trail, that same rocky trail (much easier going down) and rode back to Mahogany Creek Trail.

We got back to camp around 3:30 or 4:00 PM and had another great dinner thanks to Eric, who brought the carne asada, he and Shahin grilled them up perfectly.
Excellent food on this trip guys! :)

On Sunday, we awoke to a warmer (not much = 35 degrees) morning with Eric & Terry all packed up and ready to head home. Falcon and I rode up Jackass Trail to Alabanita to Beach Ridge Loop and just had a blast. That is a fun (and popular, too popular) ride.
Here's Shahin on his Honda 650.

And that was our weekend. No major crashes. Nobody got hurt. And we got in and out of there without any major weather changes.
See you guys back on the trails. :ride:
