Planned Trip to the Ridge Route changed direction

Postby jonnyNITRO » Mon Nov 29, 2010 3:07 pm

Well, Mark set up a ride this Sunday to head up to do the tracks from the Old Ridge Route back to the Rock House. It sounded good to us (Snortn, Aaron8, Falcon, Mark, and me).
So we left Starbucks with the slight chance that we could pull it off, but it was looking pretty dark over those mountains.
We took Lake Hughes Road and hit some rain on the way up. I fantastic rainbow emerged as we past the lake and into the storm.
The rain came down like little needles and the temperature had dropped to almost freezing. In fact, by the time we reached Lk. Elizabeth Road it was snowing.
:ride:

Pelting rain turned to flurries of snow as we regrouped and modified our riding gear.
A quick look to the West and we knew that we didn't want to go further into the storm. So we headed East and jumped onto the trails behind the Community center across from the Rock House.
As we began the dirt portion of our trip, we found patches of snow and I began to wonder... is this it?

The start of our trail.
Well, unfortunately not. We hit snow all the way to Spunky Canyon. I'm not complaining, it just turned out to be a lot more work than what was expected.

As we continued I realized just how much snow had fallen. It was fresh and thin. Actually, it was a blast to ride on...

...except for one problem. (I think I was the first to discover this since I was the first one down.) We were riding on snow-covered ice.
Fortunately I was off camera at the time but I did catch Jon behind me.

We kept plugging along with each of us dropping to inspect the ice with our bikes on more than one occasion.

As you can see in this shot, the ice showing throw the snow. Mark and Roger are working together to lift his bike.

Icey base under the snow.
It was like ice-skating. I found myself dragging both boots along the ground.

Snortn was happy get past that patch of ice. On to the next!

I don't ice skate.
But, we survived and all of us made it through without major injuries.
Time to get up the hill and run across the road to a single track that Roger knew of.

Well, that trail turned out to be covered in snow too. (And probably more ice)

Nope

So we continued on to Spunky.

Falcon was happy to see the snow and even happier to get past it.

And we stayed mostly ahead of the storm.

We reached Spunky and it we had clean riding all the way to the switchback on Bouquet Cyn.
Mark and Shahin headed home while Roger, Jon and myself went up the trail to Sierra Pelona. We dropped down Rowher Trail into Rowher Flats and took the Spring Trail back to the parking lot entrance. Roger and Jon followed me down the highway to Vasquez and we split company there.

All in all it was a great day of riding and one heck of a challenge. What a good bunch of guys to ride with.
I can't wait for the next ride.

Great photos and ride report, John. But I resent you showing me on the ground so much. I couldn't have fallen that much. I must've just hit a lot more ice than anyone else :? Thanks to all those who made it for a great day.
